The city of Jacksonville issued an air quality advisory Tuesday afternoon as smoke from massive wildfires in southeast Georgia shrouded the area with a thick haze. The City of Jacksonville’s Environmental and Compliance Department said elevated levels of particulate matter are from the smoke pushed down from Georgia. The quality was rated unhealthy for sensitive groups both Monday and Tuesday. [COJ's Air Quality Index]"The smoke extends through six counties right now and visibility continues to go down during the afternoon," Channel 4 chief meteorologist John Gaughan said at 5 p.m. "That makes me concerned for tomorrow morning because a lot of the smoke above us will settle across the area." Visibility on Wednesday morning at Jacksonville International Airport was down to one-quarter mile; a half-mile visibility reported at Cecil Field. There were numerous reports of ash falling in the greater Jacksonville area from fires burning 50 miles to the north. Some ash was spotted on cars in Channel 4's parking lot.

The smoke built up on a day when the temperatures reached near 100 degrees and the humidity was also high."It's a little bit more taxing, because you have to deal with the heat and humidity, but you have to deal with the smoke, so you don't have as much energy as you normally would," said Susan Twigg.According to city records, this is the worst air quality measured in Jacksonville since 1998.City officials urge children, the elderly and sensitive individuals to take steps to avoid exposure by staying inside or refraining from strenuous outdoor activity. Any outdoor activities should be planned for times when particulate levels are lower.
