I did get a small chance to break free and get busy at The Fly's Tie, though. I wanted to get into more detail, but time was extremely limited. Don't hate me.

You've got to hand it to IBM's engineers. They drag themselves into work after their company's 100th birthday party, pop a few Alka-Seltzers and then promptly announce yet another seismic invention. This time it's a new kind of phase change memory (PCM) that reads and writes 100 times faster than flash, stays reliable for millions of write-cycles (as opposed to just thousands with flash), and is cheap enough to be used in anything from enterprise-level servers all the way down to mobile phones. PCM is based on a special alloy that can be nudged into different physical states, or phases, by controlled bursts of electricity. In the past, the technology suffered from the tendency of one of the states to relax and increase its electrical resistance over time, leading to read errors. Another limitation was that each alloy cell could only store a single bit of data. But IBM employees burn through problems like these on their cigarette breaks: not only is their latest variant more reliable, it can also store four data bits per cell, which means we can expect a data storage "paradigm shift" within the next five years. Combine this with Intel's promised 50Gbps interconnect, which has a similar ETA, and data will start flowing faster than booze from an open bar on the boss's tab. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The city of Jacksonville issued an air quality advisory Tuesday afternoon as smoke from massive wildfires in southeast Georgia shrouded the area with a thick haze.The City of Jacksonville’s Environmental and Compliance Department said elevated levels of particulate matter are from the smoke pushed down from Georgia. The quality was rated unhealthy for sensitive groups both Monday and Tuesday. [COJ's Air Quality Index]"The smoke extends through six counties right now and visibility continues to go down during the afternoon," Channel 4 chief meteorologist John Gaughan said at 5 p.m. "That makes me concerned for tomorrow morning because a lot of the smoke above us will settle across the area."

Anonymous has set its sights on Ben Bernanke.

The most well-known hacker group, Anonymous, uploaded a video message to youtube yesterday calling for Fed Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to resign, among other things. It's embedded below.

The video begins with Bernanke saying he is 100% confident of his ability to control the income disparity in the U.S. -- the largest of any industrialized country in the world -- on 60 Minutes.

Then it says:

"Democrats have failed us, Republicans have failed us... It is time for us to stand up for ourselves... We must fight back against the organized criminal class... We must launch "operation Empire State rebellion. The operation will commence on June 14th...Operation Empire State Rebellion Engaged."

Anonymous first called for Bernanke to resign on March 12.

The group's latest Youtube video has this description: In this new video release, "as a first step," Anonymous has called for public protests beginning on June 14th, continuing "until Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke steps down." To make their case, they have presented a list of recent scandalous Federal Reserve actions.

The group also provided a Google Map guide to a series of protests, aimed to "* End the campaign finance and lobbying racket* Break up the Fed & Too Big to Fail banks* Enforce RICO laws against organized criminal class* Order Ben Bernanke to step down."

Details of Flag Day rebellion are described on the Google Map site as such:

I was sorry to hear about Revok getting arrested at the Airport recently, but what sucks even more is the outrageous amount of $320,000 bail amount that they set for him. In case you are wondering how much that is compared to other cases happening at the same time in LA check out the info that I compiled below. ALL of the cases below are from the past 2 months.

Basically you can sedate and rape a patient, videotape boys in the restroom, molest children, put a bounty on your daughters boyfriend, carry a machete in public, commit a hate crime, rape a female, or leave your baby in a car that is 115 degrees, and none of those are as bad as graffiti in the eyes of the law. All of the above crimes that i mentioned have a bail amount that is a THIRD as much as Revok’s.

I am curious to see how this plays out. I suspect with the MOCA show and the police state that LA has on street art, it’s not going to be any better.

We are focusing on Jacksonville Florida artists first and foremost. Our town has a lot of local talent and The Outer Box will be here to show the world and the community who we are. This blog is here to display the work of those who think outside the box. We will be displaying interviews with both local Jacksonville artists and folks from outside Jacksonville as well. On May 2 1973, Black Panther activist Assata Shakur (fsn) JoAnne Chesimard, was pulled over by the New Jersey State Police, shot twice and then charged with murder of a police officer. Assata spent six and a half years in prison under brutal circumstances before escaping out of the maximum security wing of the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey in 1979 and moving to Cuba.

Because of government persecution, I was left with no other choice than to flee from the political repression, racism and violence that dominate the US government's policy towards people of color. I have been a political activist most of my life, and although the U.S. government has done everything in its power to criminalize me, I am not a criminal, nor have I ever been one. "CANNA COLA" BRINGS MARIJUANA TO THE SODA INDUSTRY

ABC News reports on another weed-infused fizzy drink (see this story for a previous initiative):

Canna Cola is the new spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down.

The beverage combines soda and THC, a psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana, to create a drink that co-brand-developer Clay Butler calls “medibles,” edible medicine.

“A lot of people simply don’t want to smoke,” says co-brand developer Clay Butler. “It’s very easy to take your medication in the form of a cookie, soda or brownie and you can do that without drawing attention to yourself.”

Why soda pot? “Some people prefer medibles because it’s better on the body than smoking or prescription drugs,” says Butler. The use of marijuana-infused cola “allows them to stay away from the prescription pain killers.”

The marijuana soda comes in “12 Mind Blowing Ounces” and is expected to cost $10 to $12 but will vary based on the price of supply at dispensaries.

The drink will feature five flavors: Canna Cola, the Dr. Pepper styled Doc Weed, Orange Kush, Grape Ape and Sour Diesel. The company decided to pick classic soda types shunning atypical drinks like Lychee flavors because they provided a full spectrum of flavors.

“It had to do with understanding people were going to expect to have the classic flavors to begin with,” says Butler, who also envision a root beer or punch-flavored version of the drink.

But, if you’re wondering how the new drink tastes don’t ask Butler. “I’ve never tried marijuana and I don’t drink soda,” Butler says…

QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT COULD STRETCH ACROSS TIME

In the weird world of quantum physics, two linked particles can share a single fate, even when they’re miles apart.

Now, two physicists have mathematically described how this spooky effect, called entanglement, could also bind particles across time.

If their proposal can be tested, it could help process information in quantum computers and test physicists’ basic understanding of the universe.

“You can send your quantum state into the future without traversing the middle time,” said quantum physicist S. Jay Olson of Australia’s University of Queensland, lead author of the new study.

In ordinary entanglement, two particles (usually electrons or photons) are so intimately bound that they share one quantum state — spin, momentum and a host of other variables — between them. One particle always “knows” what the other is doing. Make a measurement on one member of an entangled pair, and the other changes immediately.

Physicists have figured out how to use entanglement to encrypt messages in uncrackable codes and build ultrafast computers. Entanglement can also help transmit encyclopedias’ worth of information from one place to another using only a few atoms, a protocol called quantum teleportation.

As we remember the courage and hope of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we must not forget that he spoke out and worked against the injustices of our nation, particularly those of racism, materialism and militarism. Indeed that is what made him so hated and so dangerous when he was alive.

We have achievements to celebrate: the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell;” the release of San Suu Kyi in Burma; the enactment of the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights by the NY legislature that extends important labor rights to 200,000 nannies and housekeepers; the victories of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers; and the exposure of secret US and other country machinations by Wikileaks, among others.

There has been progress in dismembering the laws of segregation which divided our country. We must celebrate the successes that many struggled to achieve. However, as we celebrate those victories let us not lose sight of the challenges still facing this country.

Here are some of the facts about racism, materialism and militarism in the US which we should reflect on as we decide how best to carry on the radical struggle for justice of Dr. King. (For each fact, I provide a brief cite to the sources which are listed at the end of the article).

Let us renew our commitment to the radical revolution of values for which Dr. King gave his life as we turn to the realities of current life.

(PhysOrg.com) -- A study of men attending fertility clinics has found bicycling for five or more hours a week was associated with low sperm count and poor sperm motility.

Previous studies of competitive cyclists has linked the sport to poor semen quality as well as urinary and genital problems, but until now no such links have been shown in non-competitive cyclists.

Dr. Lauren Wise, Associate Professor of Epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH), decided to see if there was a relationship between exercise and fertility. Along with her colleagues she studied 2,261 men who were members of couples attending one of three fertility clinics in the Boston area between 1993 and 2003. She gave each of the men about to undergo their first IVF cycles a questionnaire that included questions about their exercise levels, type of exercise, general health and medical history, and each man also provided at least one semen sample.

The results of the prospective cohort study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility showed that, after adjustment for variables such as multivitamin use, blood pressure, weight, and type of underwear worn, exercise levels generally had no overall impact on sperm quality and quantity.

When the researchers broke the data down into specific forms of exercise, they found that men who bicycled for five hours or more a week were more likely to have a low sperm count and poor quality (low motility) sperm than men who did not exercise at all or those doing other forms of exercise. Less than a quarter of the non-exercisers had a low sperm count compared to 31 percent of the frequent bike riders. Just over a quarter (27 percent) of the sedentary men had poor sperm motility compared with 40 percent of the cyclists.

Dr. Wise speculated that semen may be affected by temperature increases in the scrotum or trauma while cycling, but said it was much too early to be sure of the cause, and she added that it is as yet “unknown whether cycling itself actually caused the issues with their sperm.” Since the men were attending fertility clinics, it is also not possible to say whether or not the findings would be the same among the general population, and further research would be needed to make any firm conclusions.

"Keeping up with art is hard; trips to galleries, enormous books, and costly bi-annual magazines are just a few of the many expenses you will incur during the process of attempting to stay current with art. While the challenge and difficult of this proposition would seem to actually attract more white people than dissuade them, the amount of work required to become and remain an expert on art is simply too much for the majority of white people.

Of course there are exceptions such as the people who have invested both their money and their lives into the appreciation of art: people with Art History Degrees. But as you have probably noticed, they have very little value to both you and society. The latter is evidenced by their annual salary while the former is to be determined on a person by person basis.

Currently, the artist who is both cutting edge and easy to keep up with is Banksy, and white people love him. He is anonymous, British, easy to understand, and he works in the medium of graffiti! This last bit is very important since all white people consider graffiti to be art when it looks like something other than a bunch of squiggles. In every other instance, they consider it vandalism.

As with any conversation involving white people and taste you should be forewarned that you are walking into a potential minefield. However, art does not work the same way as Indie Music when it comes to the need to like the obscure.

Here’s how it works: if you say your favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh, MC Escher or Monet, you will appear as though your taste in art is derived entirely from college posters. This is unacceptable. Conversely, if you list Jeff Koons, Laurie Anderson, Damien Hirst or Basquiat, you’ll look like you are trying too hard but don’t really know what you are talking about. Chances are that white people will assume your art education consists entirely of documentaries, bio pics, and looking up references from Gossip Girl on Wikipedia.

Finally, if you list your favorite artist as a current, bleeding edge visionary who white people have not heard of, they will immediately recognize you as a threat and dislike you. It is also a certainty that they will call you pretentious behind your back.

Needless to say, it’s complicated. But Banksy is just right. He’s just edgy enough to be outside of the mainstream, but popular enough to be available in coffee table book form at Urban Outfitters. Though if you spot this book on the coffee table of a white person it is strongly recommended that you imply they got the book at a Modern Art Museum gift shop and not at an Urban Outfitters. This will make the evening far more enjoyable for everyone concerned.

If you find all of this to simply be too much work and wish to ensure that white people will never speak to you about art again, there is an easy escape. Simply mention your favorite artist is Thomas Kinkade and that you are in negotiations to purchase an original from the store in the mall. This will effectively end any friendship you have with a white person."

While reading the book by Richard Dawkins The God Delusion, I noticed he mentions the theory of people's perception of color could be akin to, say, the vast difference of snowflakes. For instance, my perception of the color red could be your perception of the color green, or vice versa. Or orange to you could be pink to me, etc. There are universal terms for colors, yet no two perceptions of contrast, brightness, hue and so on are identical. I find this to be a fascinating line of thought because this very same principle could influence one's opinion of an artists work. If an artist takes color combination into consideration when planning and executing a piece, his perception of those colors may seem harmonious; but an observer may find that same combination cantankerous, in a sense.

So I'm finally in a position to start working on pieces again after not being able to buy art supplies for damn near three months. Unemployment is a bitch. Anyway, I was in Gainesville last night and let me just say that those cats out there seriously appreciate seeing live art done. Bigup to the Sharab Lounge crew and thanks to the cat that bought the piece I did at the end of the night. Even though I let this girl I met paint flowers on it, the man still bought it. Awesome. Although I have to say this: the city of Gainesville needs to learn how to block off the roads they're doing construction on. I think I drove right into the middle of the same work site twice last night. Fun times.

“The three-year-old just walked right past me,” the Santa Rosa, CA, pediatrician reported, “talking into a cell phone.” That stark image of toddler attached to machine has troubled me. “I was amused at first,” the physician continued. “Then I felt sad. She was learning how to relate to people through a machine. It was so mechanical. Cell phones can connect people, but they also speed things up.” Must we rush even toddlers into machines? “Half of British children aged 5 to 9 own a mobile phone. Some Experts are Unhappy,” headlines a June 23, 2009 article in the UK’s daily “The Times.” It reports that “Lawrie Challies, an emeritus professor of physics who has led the Government’s mobile- phone safety research, says that parents should not give children phones before secondary school.” (Mobile phones for children: a boon or a peril? Times Online – UK) University of Melbourne pediatrics professor Michael Carr-Gregg, a leading Australian psychologist, “is worried about the power of mobile phones to distract and overexcite” and “says that no children should be allowed a mobile phone until the age of 12.” The French Government bans sales of mobile phones to children under 6.

The long-term consequences of young children already taking their gaze away from living people and constantly-changing nature to look down into and be captured by static machines concerns me. Who benefits and what is lost? What is appropriate technology use? What induces obsessive/compulsive/addictive behavior?

We are now living in a post fast-food-awareness reality, riding on the wake of Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser's books (who rode on the wake of Wendell Berry), films like Food, Inc., renegade farmer heros like Joel Salatin and Eliot Coleman, and the ever-increasing popularity of urban gardening and locavores. But awareness, like anything, has its dark side.

Perhaps the hardest thing we post fast-food-aware people face now, is actually doing something -- apart from reading the book and watching the movie, that is. Because things like slavery were abolished, but racism persists. And women got the vote, but men still make more money in the workplace. So maybe "organic" yogurt is now on Wal-Mart's shelves, but that doesn't mean outdated, inhumane practices like factory farming will not persist. They'll just call it something else. It's a common thing, historically -- big business trying to blind the masses with our own beacons.

The following is an excerpt from The War on Bugs by Will Allen. It has been adapted for the Web.

The small American farms that raised livestock as well as row or orchard crops and had suffered through depression and war faced even greater challenges shortly after World War II. Farmers were buffeted by the costs of changing both equipment and practices as farms became more chemically intensive and mechanized. Small farmers struggled in vain to compete with the further consolidation and expansion of the highly integrated farm monopolies, such as Continental Grain, Cargill, Archer Daniels Midland, and Richland Rice and Dunavant Enterprises and J.G. Boswell in cotton.

In their struggle to survive, many sought to copy the corporate industrial model of farming and got bigger. Others attempted to sell directly to local outlets as they always had. But following the war, an urban and suburban housing expansion took place near many cities that raised the value and the tax base on millions of acres of farmland. The increased tax base and increased noise and smell ordinances made it more difficult to farm conveniently and profitably close to cities. This cut tens of thousands of growers off from marketing their products directly to consumers.

Then, in the early 1950s, chemical researchers threw another technical dagger at family farmers. The chemical-pharmaceutical firms introduced a dramatically new technology that completely transformed the meat, poultry, and dairy industries -- antibiotic farming. This miracle technology allowed farmers for the first time to confine large numbers of cows, pigs, and chickens in enclosed areas and still keep them healthy. Advertised as a revolution in animal management, this breakthrough resulted in no small part from the discovery that antibiotics, when added in subtherapeutic dosages to animal feeds, could be used to promote weight gain and prevent diseases. These management practices set in motion the next great reduction of small and diversified family farms in the United States by allowing the creation of huge, intensively managed animal-confinement operations.

You know it's getting bad when we're developing ways to make piss into fuel. In some places in America, you'd get shot for pissing in someone's gas tank. Now you'd be helping people out. This still doesn't top when you were a kid and you couldn't afford real Kool-Aid so you just drank sugar water. I know I'm not alone.

Oh, and in case anyone of color wasn't aware, the Israelis are apparently kidnapping Black people. Yeah. Apparently Cynthia McKinney is in jail for an attempted humanitarian effort to Gaza:

“Most members of a group of foreign peace activists seized at sea by the Israeli navy remained in custody Friday, three days after their failed attempt to run Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip, relatives and supporters said,” the Associated Press reports.

The AP add that “the Free Gaza Movement sent the ship loaded with humanitarian supplies and 21 activists and crew from Cyprus.”

“Because we wouldn’t turn around, the Israelis hijacked us,” former Rep. Cynthia McKinney told WBAIX in a phone call from Ramle jail, near Ben-Gurion airport. “Because we wanted to give crayons to the children of Gaza.”

Man, it seems like a lot of the greats have been passing. IZ, reppin' TNB, was known as the king of bombing; often doing up to 100 or so throw ups a night. I don't know too many writers who can say they do or have done that. He will be missed.

"Graf legend Iz the Wiz passed away yesterday after struggling for many years with kidney failure. Iz was one of the original New York Kings who influenced me and so many others. I can honestly say that his method of hitting trains with back-to-back-to-back fill-ins directly influenced my bombing style, as well as that of another fallen King, my homie SIL 5×7. May they both rest in peace.
The footage above shows Iz hitting one last train just days before his passing. Robbie has a couple more clips of Iz from the original Style Wars and the new bonus DVD footage."

Yes, a mannequin. I'll paint on anything, son. Oops, I better not say that too loud. Next thing you know, Google will be trying to get me to work for them for free. That's like Playboy asking models to get naked for free just so their fathers can disown them. "Sure, boss! I'd love to!" PFFFFT.

Quick question: Why is this happening?

Uh...yeah. Because you need a sniper rifle for the plethora of jaywalkers. I think dude asked the right question, "They expecting a war?" Maybe they're preparing to stop Pixar from making more movies. Who knows? All I know is I don't feel too comfortable with some cop who's armed like Cobra Commander pulling me over for not wearing my seat belt.

I actually had respect for most people in this video for putting scientific knowledge in a format to where at least children would understand it. That is until dude tried to b-boy. Then I just face-palmed. I understand they're just attempting to be witty, but I don't think that they realize they are simultaneously mocking a whole culture. It's still funny, though.

This is one of the funniest flicks I've seen in a minute.

The Wackness is a 2008 American coming of age comedy-drama film by Jonathan Levine and starring Ben Kingsley, Josh Peck, Famke Janssen, and Olivia Thirlby. The film is distributed by Sony Pictures Classics and was released in the U.S. on July 3, 2008.

It's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop. Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) is a socially uncomfortable teenage pot dealer with no friends, issues with his parents, and a complete lack of confidence with girls. He trades weed for sessions with his therapist, Dr. Squires (Ben Kingsley), whose wife (Famke Janssen) is slipping away from him. Squires - a drug-addled shrink with a receding hairline and a state of mind slouching back to adolescence - is a terrible role model. But the two of them forge a friendship based on a mutual need: neither one has a girlfriend. The intergenerational duo set off on a crawl that takes them all over New York, where they encounter several of Luke's "business associates," including a dreadlocked pixie (Mary-Kate Olsen), a one-hit-wonder (Jane Adams), and Luke's supplier (Method Man). Luke has long had an aching crush on Dr. Squires' way-out-of-his-league stepdaughter, Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby), and is stunned at his good luck when she returns his affections. They end up going to a beach where Shapiro loses his virginity and tells her that he loves her. Stephanie is shocked at the comment and tells him to slow down. Their relationship ends up fading and Shapiro finds her with another man (Aaron Yoo). It is at this time that he realizes that she is never actually going to settle down with him. He and Dr. Squires create an even closer bond after Shapiro is evicted along with his parents, and Dr. Squires gets a divorce. They eventually part ways when Shapiro goes to college and reveals at a family dinner that he's going to become a shrink because, as he says, "I figure I have experience because the people around [me] are all fucking crazy." The movie closes with him getting on a train to go to college in Burlington, Vermont.
