Heavy Weight Champion Sound

Here's a whole slew of Jeff Mills mixes. Enjoy yourself.

From MixCloud:

Biography

"Jeff Mills is considered one of the most brilliant DJ and producers of techno in the World. He is the most recognized representative figure of the Detroit Techno, where he began his career as a DJ on the WDRQ radio in 1984. He has created with “Mad Mike Banks” the collective “Underground Resistance”, which became a reference in the electro sphere. In 1992, Jeff Mills created his own label in Chicago :with “Axis”, he could keep his artistic independence and produce his own timeless electronic music compositions, inspired of science fiction. Jeff Mills’ artistic career goes much further than techno music. For over a decade, he’s been transcending disciplines with a large number of collaborations in contemporary art. Interested in cinema and attracted by images, Jeff Mills started working, in 2000, on the fusion of image and sound. In 2000, he created and presented at the Centre Pompidou a new sound track for the film “Metropolis” by Fritz Lang. A year after, he created “Mono”, an installation inspired by the movie “2001, a Space Odyssey”, by Stanley Kubrick. In 2004, Jeff Mills produced the DVD “Exhibitionist” which presents DJ sets filmed from various angles (from front, top and side). At that same period, he acquired a new tool, the DVJ-X which allowed him to manipulate image and sound together paving the way into the Art World. In 2005, Jeff Mills made, for MK2, a new sound track for the silent movie “Three Ages” by Buster Keaton, and created a serie of 6 video art works presented in Paris at the Galerie Georges-Philippe et Nathalie Vallois and at the « rendez-vous vidéo » of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. Jeff Mills continued this work period with a production on Josephine Baker, presented during the FIAC 2005 in the Grand Palais. On July 2nd 2005, Jeff Mills played together with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Montpellier, for the 20th anniversary of the Pont du Gard's inclusion in the world heritage list by UNESCO. Together with the orchestra, Jeff Mills performed his own compositions, orchestrated by Thomas Roussel for this occasion. In 2007, he was invited by the movie director Claire Denis to create the sound environment of the exhibition « Diaspora » at the musée du quai Branly in Paris.. That same year, Jeff Mills received the title of « Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres» from the French ministry of Culture. In 2008, Jeff Mills was commissioned to create a comtemporary installation for 100 Year Anniversary of the Futurist Manifesto at the Pompidou Center. At the Sonar Festival in Barcelona, Jeff Mills and « Mad Mike Banks » were together again for an historical performance called « X-102, Rediscovers the Rings of Saturn », mixing video and music. Always busy, Jeff Mills is involved in numerous projects at this time. The next event: For the 100 Year anniversary of the famous director, Cecil B. DeMille, he'll perform a Cinenamix at the French Cinematheque in Paris April 2nd. Go to www.axisrecords.com for more info."

Mixed media on paper

There are false meme's dictating that pursuing knowledge leads individuals to become estranged from their fellow man. An unspeakable air of pending ostracism is met when an individual begins to go "too in depth" within a given subject; as if to say that "we were willing to discuss said subject, but only to the degree that it doesn't make anyone uncomfortable". I think that most people mistake happiness and truth with comfort. The flaw in that type of thought process is that although large amounts of chocolate make you happy, you're more than likely going to have some long term adverse effects from eating large amounts of said chocolate. It is quite possible anyone who follows the preceding logic of "comfort = happiness" can easily fall into an ongoing mentality of the old adage Ignorance Is Bliss. We'd rather not know and walk around smiling, shopping, and having babies. There are many readily available phrases and cliches that are used to escape reality, such as "it doesn't directly effect me" or "that's useless knowledge". I'm sure the laws of gravity were considered useless knowledge to the mainstream at some point...until we decided we wanted to be airborne and fly planes.

Dave Chappelle said it best, "America needs to have a serious discourse with itself."

Idea Inundation

Idea Inundation

Anyone who's ever been involved in any type of creative process will immediately identify with these forces in motion. This was an attempt to illustrate how, in the process of concepting idea inundation can be alarming but motivating. You can fill up bunch of napkins or pages in a sketch book with all types of concepts, yet only about a fraction of those will actually go into some type of production. I'm largely talking about myself, but I'm quite sure I'm not far off in gauging that there are many out there who can testify.

But, on a more interesting note:

Untitled Parts 1 & 2

Untitled Parts 1 & 2

This was a commission for a local business owner. The purpose of this piece was to simultaneously give a feeling of stillness and motion. When most people think of a tree, the imagery that comes to mind is either of one swaying or one just being still. A lone tree does not move from it's position; it is immobile. Yet, the wind can cause it to seem to be "alive".

KARMALOOP & ARTISTIC REVOLT BOOTLEGS CRYPTIK

Did someone seriously think that would fly? That's like Pizza Hut taking the Publix logo, slapping it on their pizza boxes, and calling it a ravioli revolt.

Unforgivable.

I want to go ahead and go on record by saying that you're not real until you've broken out a Wok and made your own stir fry:

But don't do it with your shirt off.  Just sayin'.

Bauhaus Style DOOM Poster

Bauhaus Style DOOM Poster

http://metalfacedoom.com/

From The New Yorker:

ABSTRACT: ONWARD AND UPWARD WITH THE ARTS about the rapper MF Doom. The writer first heard the rapper Daniel Dumile when he was fourteen and hip-hop was just beginning to bloom. Performing under the name Zevlove X, Dumile made his debut in 1989 with a verse on a song called “The Gas Face.” Two years later, as a member of the group KMD, Dumile released the album “Mr. Hood.” Dumile’s style is vibrant and freewheeling; he skates over the beat, sliding words into the empty spaces between the snare and the kick drums. In 1993, Dumile’s brother Dingilizwe, also a member of KMD and known as Subroc, was hit by a car and killed. Dumile vanished from the national scene and began living as a civilian in New York City. He had a child. Then, in 1999, Dumile released a solo record, “Operation: Doomsday,” under the moniker Metal Face Doom.

Lissitzky Style Poster

Lissitzky Style Poster

I almost get the feeling I'm looking at a poster for an artist version of the movie Saw. Minus the ridiculous plot and immense amount of unnecessary gore. However, the digital aspect of design has proven to be a lot more fun than I anticipated. James Brown would be proud.

To my fellow geeks out there, it's that time again:

Perseid Meteor Shower Of 2012 Peaks Sunday, August 12th

From Space.com:

One of the most pleasant treats on a warm summer night is to lie out under a starry sky and try to see a few shooting stars, or meteors. Luckily, right now is a great time to try to see meteors in the night sky.

Any night this week you will have a good chance of seeing the annual Perseid meteor shower. These objects are tiny bits of rock and debris from an old comet, which is named Swift-Tuttle after the astronomers who discovered it in 1862.

Every year in early August, Earth passes through the comet Swift-Tuttle's orbit and sweeps up some of this debris. As the tiny rocks encounter the thin upper atmosphere of the Earth, the air is heated to incandescence and we see a rapid streak of light.

If you haven't heard of ROA, might I direct your attention here:

Image from Juxtapoz

I first heard of ROA's work when he did a campaign of his signature, larger than life animal paintings in Gambia. However, the original images I saw weren't of eviscerated rats. Even so, he's put a different take on the guerilla aspect of street art. Way beyond the WOW effect.

Image Is Everything

Concepts For A Paint Manufacturer (Fictional)

One thing I've learned (or I am in the process of learning) in "skool" is that the imagery you choose can speak volumes. While the images above may be judged as elementary by any design professional, it would be an entirely different story if I were selling feminine deodorant spray...or socks.

But, anyway...

Notice that he's wearing a Texas A&M hat. I don't think I have to say anything else.

Brain Hack

Brain Hack

Ok, for starters this pic is hilarious:

Sean looks like he just got caught brushing his teeth with motor oil and Kurt looks like he just beat a Nazi sergeant to death with a baseball bat. Two more hilarious dudes on the planet, there are not.

CRYPTIK is at it again with his new line of 24k gold pins.

I've copped a few of his tees. I love the iconic imagery and bold line work; and the script is just dope. I highly suggest checking out his website and reading the manifesto.

And then there was...

Heidi Taillefer

Image From Juxtapoz

There are so many things right with her work I can't even begin to type anything to describe it. Complex and vivid, Heidi brings forth an innovative approach to surrealism and form. The images within the images convey the message. It's like reading a book in 11 seconds.

"Think Green" Concept

"Think Green" Concept

If there's one thing I learned in the process of executing this project is that there are an infinite amount of variations of the color green. While I realize that the light bulb/brain concept has been done, no one's ever thrown broccoli into the mix. 47 O.G. points right off the top right there.

I bet not one person reading this saw me ever making a calendar series. But there's a first time for everything. You might even start seeing flamingos in some of my projects. Flamingos krumping to Drake tunes. Watch how much I bank.
